Frequently Asked Questions

Am I Gifted? Is My Child Gifted? Is This Right for Me?

Whether you or your child have been formally identified as “gifted,” or just suspect you might be, you’re welcome here. Giftedness is a fluid, multi-faceted phenomenon that exists outside the confines of a single cognitive test score. If you resonate with what you’ve seen here, then you are likely a good fit for this work. I also recommend reading this article if you suspect you are a gifted adult and would like to learn more.

In general, I’m less concerned that you or your child meet a specific definition, cut-off, or label and more interested in understanding how common gifted attributes currently appear in your life. I can also refer you to my network of trusted testing professionals who can provide comprehensive diagnostic support if you’re looking for neuropsychological assessment.

What is Education Consulting? What is Coaching? How Are They Different from Therapy?

Consulting, coaching, and therapy are related but distinct professions. It is important that you locate the correct professional for your needs. I am an education consultant and career coach, not a clinician or therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat mental health or other conditions.

Education consultants help individuals and families to identify and select the best educational environment for their or their child’s needs. They may also consult with and train other professionals in the education field, as I do. My consulting work is focused on helping gifted and twice-exceptional students and families find appropriate educational settings, from pre-K through college. I work directly with families and schools, often serving as an expert advocate for families navigating the gifted and special education process, and as a liaison for specific schools to help them match with students. I also speak at national conferences and provide training for teachers, administrators, and other professionals.

Coaches focus on enhancing performance and achieving specific goals and outcomes. Some coaches have first-hand or lived experience in their area of focus, while others have advanced training. Coaches do not perform therapeutic work, but are very practical, and help you define and pursue specific, actionable outcomes. Coaches do not need to be licensed, which is why it is important to carefully select a coach with the background, experience, and credentials needed for your area of focus. As a career coach, I support gifted and twice-exceptional individuals in finding meaningful, satisfying careers through the CURIOUS Career Cohort (C³), a small-group program built on my proprietary CURIOUS Career Framework™. I have 15+ years direct experience, plus advanced training and several degrees and certifications in gifted development, career development, and psychology.

Mental health professionals (e.g., therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.) diagnose and/or treat mental health conditions. This is a highly regulated field with strict licensure requirements. Like coaches, therapists may focus on goal-setting and help you to achieve them, but unlike coaches, therapists often focus on your past, episodes of trauma, and teaching you specific coping skills. They typically have advanced skills and training in specific therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy.

An easy way to conceptualize the differences is with athletes. A consultant can help the athlete find the right team, coaches, or sport for their abilities. A coach supports the athlete in improving their skills and winning games through discrete skill refinement, goal-setting, and practice. A mental health professional supports the psychological health of the athlete, ensuring they are ready for game play, analyzing past psychological roadblocks, failures, or challenges, and teaching the athlete specific coping skills.

Do You Work One-on-One?

Yes, with education consulting clients. However, for career coaching clients, as of June 2026, I have transitioned exclusively to a group coaching model. Over the years, I’ve found that gifted people do best in community with others who understand them, and working with gifted peers accelerates our progress.

What Happens In The CURIOUS Career Cohort (C³)?

The CURIOUS Career Cohort is a 12-week, small-group career coaching intensive with Emmaly and co-facilitator Erin Krellwitz, grounded in the evidence-based CURIOUS Career Framework™. Cohorts begin on a rolling basis throughout the year and are capped at 12 people.

Every registration includes 12 weekly live group coaching sessions, a copy of The CURIOUS Career Workbook™, weekly guided exercises, access to the private C3 online community, expert accountability from two trained coaches, and gifted peer support.

Before registering, you’ll book a free 20-minute intro call with Erin to make sure the cohort is the right fit. Learn more about C3 here.

What Are SENG Community Groups?

Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) Community Groups give gifted and twice-exceptional people a place to talk about the joys and the difficulties of the gifted experience with peers who understand. Topics range widely from sensitivity, intensity, and social navigation, to education and career, dual diagnosis, and raising gifted children.

Every group is led by two SENG-certified facilitators, capped at 10–15 people, and meets on Zoom so you can join from anywhere in the world. These are not therapy groups, and they are not classes. They are supportive, non-competitive peer discussions in safe spaces with trained facilitators. See open groups here.
