Am I Gifted? Is My Child Gifted? Is This Right for Me?
Whether you or your child have been formally identified as “gifted,” or just suspect you might be, you’re welcome to set up a free 20-minute introductory call to see if we’d be a good fit for one another. I also recommend taking this brief informational but non-scientific quiz before our call to get a sense of your unique needs and gifted attributes.
In general, I’m less concerned that you or your child meet a specific definition, cut-off, or label and more interested in understanding how common gifted attributes currently appear in your life. I can also refer you to my network of trusted testing professionals who can provide comprehensive diagnostic support if you’re looking for neuropsychological assessment.
Additionally, it may be helpful to read this article that I wrote on the Beyond Gifted Substack, which describes some of the common definitions of giftedness as well as the specific interpretation I use when working with individuals and organizations. Check it out here!
What is Education Consulting? What is Coaching? How Are They Different from Therapy?
Consulting, coaching, and therapy are related but distinct professions. It is important that you locate the correct professional for your needs. I am a education consultant and career coach, not a clinician or therapist, and I do not diagnose or treat mental health or other conditions.
Education consultants help individuals and families to identify and select the best educational environment for their or their child’s needs. They may also consult with other professionals in the education field to provide training, expert advice, and resources.
My consulting work is focused on helping gifted and twice-exceptional students and families find appropriate educational settings, from pre-K through college. I work directly with families and schools, often serving as an expert advocate for families navigating the gifted and special education process, and as a liaison for specific schools to help them match with students. I also speak at national conferences and provide training for teachers, administrators, and other professionals.
Coaches focus on enhancing performance and achieving specific goals and outcomes. Some coaches have first-hand or lived experience in their area of focus, while others have advanced training. Coaches do not perform therapeutic work, but are very practical, and help you define and pursue specific, actionable outcomes. Coaches do not need to be licensed, which is why it is important to carefully select a coach with the background, experience, and credentials needed for your area of focus.
As a career coach, I support gifted and twice-exceptional individuals in finding meaningful, satisfying careers using my proprietary CURIOUS Career Framework™. I have 15+ years direct experience, plus advanced training and several degrees and certifications in gifted development, career development, and psychology.
Mental health professionals (e.g., therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc.) diagnose and/or treat mental health conditions. This is a highly regulated field with strict licensure requirements. Like coaches, therapists may focus on goal-setting and help you to achieve them, but unlike coaches, therapists often focus on your past, episodes of trauma, and teaching you specific coping skills. They typically have advanced skills and training in specific therapeutic techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy.
An easy way to conceptualize the differences is with athletes. A consultant can help the athlete find the right team, coaches, or sport for their abilities. A coach supports the athlete in improving their skills and winning games through discrete skill refinement, goal-setting, and practice. A mental health professional supports the psychological health of the athlete, ensuring they are ready for game play, analyzing past psychological roadblocks, failures, or challenges, and teaching the athlete specific coping skills.
What Happens In A Coaching Session?
I always begin coaching new clients by gathering information about your career development. This includes administering the CURIOUS Career Index™, and establishing goals for our work together. We usually spend the first session talking about these goals.
Subsequent sessions, and the time between sessions, includes practical skill building and feedback on skill development. I often provide homework and activities to do in-between sessions such as journaling, observation, market research, self-analysis, and gathering information from others. All of this is in service of better understanding your giftedness and achieving your specific goals, so it will look different for every client.
What Are Your Fees?
I work on a sliding scale, and charge based on the type of service, number of participants, and the level of involvement for the work. I will provide a cost breakdown to you prior to any services being rendered.
Review my Service Guide HERE!
Coaching/Consulting: $200/50-minute session, with reduced fees when you purchase a coaching package or demonstrate financial need. I aim to offer services that affordable for as many people as possible, while also ensuring I can support my own business.
Workshops: Starting at $75/hour per person, with discounted rates for larger sessions (i.e., groups of 20 or more). Rates are dependent on the level of customization of the workshop and the duration.
Educational Placement: Starting at $3500 for full-service support, but fee is negotiable dependent upon the degree of my involvement. I can provide shorter consulting sessions for less intensive needs, but can also dedicate considerable time to helping you locate a permanent school for your child. I research gifted schools and programs in your target area, provide comprehensive reports on student achievement outcomes by school and district, discuss alignment with your child’s learning needs, and provide information about school demographics, finances, and school culture that is often impossible to glean from online sources alone. When possible, I also conduct informational interviews with current parents, staff, students or alumni on your behalf, and attend school tours with or on behalf of your family. Schools tours are done in person if in Colorado, or virtually if outside of Colorado.
Payment: I accept Cash, Zelle, Venmo, Paypal, and Stripe.
Where Are You Located?
I am based in Denver, Colorado but conduct virtual coaching, consulting, and workshops in all 50 states in the U.S. via Zoom, Teams, or your preferred platform. If you are located outside the U.S., I am happy to refer you to others who conduct similar work in your country. For an additional fee, I am able to travel within a 65-mile radius of the Denver Metro to deliver in-person workshops. I also accept occasional speaking engagements at National Conferences.
